What is Halloween?

Halloween is an annual holiday celebrated on October 31, 2021, at midnight in Western Time zones. It all started with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. Child-friendly activities, such as trick-or-treating, wearing costumes, pumpkin carving, playing pranks, telling scary stories, and light bonfires traditionally characterize Halloween.

Origins

The ancient Celtic festival of Samhain was celebrated on the night of October 31st, which is the background of Halloween. It marked the end of the harvest season, and winter was thought to begin on that night. People believed that ghosts of the dead could come into the living world on this night, so people tried to appease them with gifts to prevent them from causing any harm.

How do people celebrate?

Around the world, communities celebrate different customs and traditions at this time of year. For Americans, Halloween conjures images of witches and ghosts, and it is a date on which all people can have fun.

Children knock on doors, shouting "Trick or treat!". All the people enjoy Halloween; it's an exciting time of year — Candy, treats, costumes, fun times with friends, and orange pumpkins.

Halloween in Switzerland. How do Swiss celebrate Halloween?

Swiss people are adapting this tradition somehow as fun activities with pumpkins, face paints, and much more. There are some super strict laws regarding Halloween; for instance, people cannot wear any Halloween mask in public, and no silly strings are allowed.

Did you know that in Switzerland:

  • Clowns that can terrorize people are prohibited.
  • No trick and treat is permitted after 8 pm and on Sundays.
